Highlights of the First Edition
The first edition of the Students Information Storage Technology Competition, hosted by Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) and sponsored by Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd., provided an exceptional opportunity to cultivate, select, and recommend outstanding talent in storage technology. The competition helped foster students' innovative thinking, teamwork, and knowledge of cutting-edge storage technologies.
The competition was divided into two tracks: a challenging Track and a free track, allowing participants to choose their preferred format. There were two main problems set for the competition:
1.Topic One: Design and implementation of a storage encoding algorithm.
2.Topic Two: Design and implementation of a data retrieval task scheduling algorithm.
A total of 194 teams from 44 universities across the country participated in the competition. After several rounds of evaluation, three teams were awarded first prize, six received second prize, and nine earned third prize. On April 4, 2023, the awards ceremony for the first National University Student Information Storage Technology Competition was held at HUST. During the ceremony, first and second-prize teams defended their projects, competing for the top award. Academician Zheng Weimin from Tsinghua University's School of Computer Science, among other experts, provided live feedback and evaluation.
Ultimately, the team led by Hu Guangxing from HUST won the special award with their project “Design and Implementation of a Data Retrieval Task Scheduling Algorithm Based on the Hill-Climbing Algorithm”and they received a prize of 50,000 RMB.
The enterprise expressed high recognition for the performance of the participating students. Yu Haibo, Director of Huawei Wuhan Research Institute, noted in his speech that Huawei's specially designed challenge transformed industry storage problems into algorithmic scheduling challenges. Many students offered outstanding solutions, which brought fresh perspectives to real-world business issues.
As the first national university-level competition focused on information storage technology, its significance was particularly notable. Professor Feng Dan remarked, "As one of the core components of computing, the storage network is a key field in computer research. There are still many unsolved challenges in this area, and we hope more students will participate in this work and seize this opportunity to showcase and exchange their ideas." She encouraged students to engage with storage technology research, injecting new energy and vitality into developing China's information storage technology.
HUST and Huawei have long-term collaborations, including establishing a joint research center for new storage technologies and an innovation talent cultivation base to nurture creative talent in the field of information storage jointly.
