Department Timeline

In September 2021, the School of Computer Science and Technology welcomed certified experts in undergraduate education to conduct an inspection tour.

On January 3, 2020, the groundbreaking ceremony of the building of the School of Computer Science and Technology was held.

In 2018, with the active efforts of the School and HUST, alumni donated 110 million yuan to build the computer building. At present, the building is under construction, and the dream of several generations of teachers and students related to the major of computer science is about to come true.

In 2018, the international assessment of disciplines was organized. The School of Computer Science and Technology of HUST continuously strengthened the exchange and cooperation with Carnegie Mellon University and other famous universities, jointly organized the application of international (regional) cooperation and exchange programs, and hosted several influential international academic conferences.

In 2016, in response to the national security strategy, the School of Computer Science and Technology of HUST organized the application and was approved as the first batch to confer a doctoral degree in the first-level discipline of Cyberspace Security. In the fourth round of discipline evaluation organized by the Ministry of Education, the evaluation result of Computer Science and Technology was A, and it was one of the first batches selected as the "Double First-class" key construction discipline of the Ministry of Education. The international academic influence continued to improve. In 2017, it entered the top 1‰ in the world in terms of ESI for the first time.

[Note: "Double First-class" refers to the first-class universities and disciplines of the world.]

In 2008, the Computer Science and Technology discipline was rated as the first-level and key discipline of Hubei Province, and the second-level discipline of Computer System Structure was rated as the characteristic discipline of Hubei Province.

In 2003, Information Security was newly established as a major for undergraduate students, and in 2010, Internet of Things Engineering was newly established as a major for undergraduate students. To explore the new mode of training innovative talents, the Undergraduate Program for the Advanced Class of Computer Science and Technology (ACM Class) was initiated in 2009, and Exemplary Engineering Education Program was started in 2011.

In 2003, the doctoral program of Information Security, a second-level discipline, was approved to establish. In 2011, the first-level field of Software Engineering was newly established by the state. In the same year, the doctoral program of the first-level discipline of Software Engineering was approved to establish. In 2012, the post-doctoral research center of Software Engineering was approved to establish, which is one of the few institutions with two doctoral programs in the first-level discipline. The international academic influence of Computer Science and Technology has been dramatically improved. In 2011, it entered the global top 1% of ESI (Essential Science Indicators) for the first time.

In 2002, the second-level discipline of Computer System Structure was successfully selected in the national key discipline review after years of accumulation. In the same year, the discipline of Computer Software and Theory was rated as the key discipline of Hubei Province, realizing a breakthrough in discipline construction.

In 2002, during the first first-level discipline evaluation organized by the Ministry of Education, the Computer Science and Technology discipline ranked the 12th; in 2006, it ranked 9th in the second evaluation; and in 2012, it ranked the 10th (top 10%) in the third evaluation.

On May 26, 2000, four schools merged into one (named HUST). In November 2000, the Computer and Application major of Wuhan Urban Construction Institute and the Computer Science Department of Officials Management Institute under the State Scientific and Technological Commission was incorporated successively. On November 1, 2000, 38 teachers from Wuhan Urban Construction Institute and Officials Management Institute under the State Scientific and Technological Commission joined the School of Computer Science and Technology. In this way, the School completed the merging of disciplines.

In 2000, the doctoral program of Computer Science and Technology was approved as the first-level discipline. Therefore, HIT became one of the first 14 universities and research institutes in China to have doctoral programs in first-level disciplines.

In 1999, the post-doctoral research center of Computer Science and Technology was approved to establish.

In 1998, the computer system structure was rated as the key discipline of Hubei Province, and became the first batch to enter the "Project 211" and "Project 985" construction. On the other hand, focusing on the development of characteristics and advantages, the National Laboratory of External Memory System and the National Center for High-Performance Computing (Wuhan) were established in 1990 and 1998, respectively.

At the beginning of 1998, IBM established IBM Computer Technology Cooperation Center in our university and donated large computers.

In 1998, the Computer Software and Theory doctoral program were approved to establish.

In 1997, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering changed its name to the School of Computer Science and Technology, which is still used today.

In 1986, the doctoral program in Computer Devices and Equipment was approved to establish.

In 1984, the major of Computer Peripheral Equipment began to recruit doctoral students.

In February 1979, the three majors, Computer Science, Computer Software Equipment, and Electronic Precision Machinery, were separated from their original departments. Then, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering was set up and developed according to the requirements for the first-level computer discipline.

In 1978, the SCJT sequence processor, developed by teachers and students in Computer Science major, won an award at the 1978 National Conference on Science.

In 1978, the major of Computer Science became one of the first majors to recruit postgraduate students.

In the first half of 1973, the three majors of Computer Science, Computer Software Equipment (Computer Software), and Electronic Precision Machinery (Computer Peripheral Equipment) were formally established.

In 1961, HIT changed the existing 39 majors into 18 majors. In this way, the major of computer science was suspended.

In 1958, Huazhong Institute of Technology (HIT), the predecessor of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), decided to establish a new major in computer science in the spirit of courage and progress, but the new major lasted only one year.
