On the afternoon of January 11, 2024, the School of Computer Science and Technology at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) held its first Admission Webinar for International students to the top public universities in Sri Lanka, including the University of Peradeniya. The webinar was conducted online via Zoom, with more than 50 participants. The event was co-organized by the School of Computer Science and Technology at HUST and the Computer Science Department at the University of Peradeniya. Professor Lilantha Samaranayake, the head of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Professor Manjula Sandirigama from the Computer Science Department, Professor Damayanthi Herath from the University of Peradeniya， Professor Ruixuan Li, the Vice Dean of the School of Computer Science and Technology at HUST, and Professor Jianjun Li were present.
The admission webinar began with an opening speech by Professor Ruixuan Li, who provided a brief overview of the discipline, outstanding alums, and faculty at the School of Computer Science and Technology. He expressed his best wishes to the faculties of both sides and all the participants, hoping for opportunities to meet offline and strengthen communication and cooperation.
Professor Jianjun Li presented an introduction to the School of Computer Science and Technology at HUST and the admission process. The presentation covered four main aspects: school introduction, teaching resources, academic development, and admission guidance. Firstly, he briefly introduced the history of HUST and the School of Computer Science and Technology. Founded in 1973, HUST has become one of the top talent cultivation and scientific research bases in China and the world after 50 years of development. In November 2023, HUST ranked 13th globally in the ESI ranking. It ranks in the top 5% in the US News, QS, and ARWU rankings. He then provided a comprehensive introduction to the facilities and resources available at the university, focusing on various support mechanisms and opportunities provided to students. The third part of the presentation focused on academic development, examining the evolution and innovation in different academic fields. Finally, detailed information was provided regarding the admission procedures, application requirements, and scholarships available to outstanding applicants.
Later, Hashan Ratnayake, an outstanding international student from the School, shared his learning experience in China. He talked about his academic journey at the School of Computer Science and Technology at HUST, including the intersection of different cultures, the attentive guidance of expert professors, learning the Chinese language and culture, the regular communication and training meetings in the School, and the various extracurricular activities. He expressed that his study at HUST has been greatly beneficial to him.
During the subsequent Q&A session, Mr. Jianjun Li and Mr. Zheng Shi answered inquiries from the participating international students regarding enrollment quotas, pre-admission letters, and admission procedures. They had in-depth exchanges with the international students. Finally, Professor Manjula Sandirigama, the former head of the Department of Computer Engineering at the University of Peradeniya, delivered a speech expressing his pleasure in attending the admission webinar. He hoped to strengthen cooperation between the two sides, promoting personnel exchanges, cultural exchange, and academic collaboration. The University of Peradeniya, founded in 1942, is the top-ranked university in Sri Lanka (Times Higher Education ranking 301-400). It is a member of the "One Belt, One Road" International Union of Scientific Organizations. In 2023, the School approved the International Student Academic Excellence Award for Hashan Ratnayake, an outstanding individual and an alumnus of the Computer Science Department at the University of Peradeniya. This admission webinar will deepen academic and cultural exchanges, foster mutual friendship, and expand cooperation in personnel exchanges and academic collaborations.
The School attaches great importance to international student enrollment and cultivation quality. In January 2024, the School conducted interviews for the first batch of 100 international student applicants, selecting a group of outstanding candidates with excellent educational and academic backgrounds. The School will continue to enhance the quality of international student enrollment and cultivation, establish a base for international students studying in China, and cultivate international students who love and understand China, thus promoting China's voice and telling the story of China in the international arena.
