Prof. Volker Markl Gave an online Lecture in "TIME-Frontier Seminar"

time:January 25, 2021 author: edit:Shi Zheng

In order to further enhance the academic exchange and broaden academic horizons, the School of Computer Science and Technology has decided to organize the "TIME·Frontier" Seminar series. This special event aims to invite top-notch researchers from home and abroad who have made outstanding achievements in computer science-related fields to give lectures in the school. The "TIME" culture stands for Teamwork, Innovation, Morality, and Exploration.

On Jan. 14, the first lecture of the "TIME-Frontier Seminar" invited Prof. Volker Markl, a distinguished scholar in database systems and the leader of the well-known Apache Flink project to deliver an open lecture on Trends and a Vision for database systems and information management via Zoom. There are around 70 people participated in the online lecture.

The Seminar started at 5:00 pm and prof. Qiang-Sheng Hua first gave a brief introduction to the speaker. Prof. Markl started the lecture by introducing the data as a new production factor in our life and as the fourth paradigm of doing research. Then he discussed the challenges for efficient data analysis and the stratosphere platform--a database-inspired big data analytic system. Prof. Markl continued to talk about how the stratosphere project resulted in the well-known Apache Flink, the open-source big data analytics system. In the last part, Prof. Markl elaborated on the optimization and fault tolerance methods employed in the Flink system. In the Q&A session, Prof. Markl talked about the algorithmic challenges in big data streaming processing.

Volker Markl is a Full Professor and Chair of the Database Systems and Information Management (DIMA) Group at the Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin). At the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), he is the Chief Scientist and Head of the Intelligent Analytics for Massive Data Research Group. In addition, he is the Director of the Berlin Institute for the Foundations of Learning and Data (BIFOLD), a merger of the Berlin Big Data Center (BBDC) and the Berlin Center for Machine Learning (BZML). He has been both the Speaker and Principal Investigator for the Stratosphere Project, which resulted in a Humboldt Innovation Award as well as Apache Flink, the open-source big data analytics system. He is an ACM Fellow.
