National Higher Education Institutions Outstanding Faculty in Computer Education Award Program

The "National Higher Education Institutions Outstanding Faculty in Computer Education Award Program " is a non-governmental public welfare award program established through the support and guidance of the Ministry of Education and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. It was jointly initiated by the Turing Award winner and recipient of the Chinese Government Friendship Award, foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, John Hopcroft, and Professor Wen Gao, Chairman of the China Computer Federation and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. The program was funded by donations from several high-tech enterprises with significant social impact to the China Teacher Development Foundation.

The program initiated its first evaluation and award phase as a pilot in 2018. It carefully chose undergraduate foundational courses in computer education. It facilitated on-site assessments of classroom teaching conducted by expert peers. Outstanding faculty members were duly recognized and rewarded, aiming to foster increased attention to undergraduate classroom teaching within higher education institutions. The program sought to effectively enhance the interplay between teaching and research while elevating the overall quality of computer education in China.

In 2018, the program was implemented as a pilot in computer education at nine domestic universities. In 2019, the program expanded its coverage to more than 40 domestic universities, encompassing ten categories of undergraduate foundational courses related to computer science. In 2021, the program organized its third selection for outstanding faculty members in computer education for higher education institutions, covering more than 40 domestic universities and 257 undergraduate computer science instructors. During the 2022-2023 academic year, the award program received 153 applications from candidates across 42 universities. Eventually, only 55 of these candidates were selected and honored.

Leihua Qin| Award-winning Course: "Fundamentals of Logic and Computer System Design"

Leihua Qin is a member of the Teaching Guidance Committee for Computer-related Majors under the Ministry of Education, the Vice Chairman of the National Computer Education Research Association for Higher Education Institutions, and a distinguished teaching professor in Hubei Province. He teaches courses such as "Fundamentals of Logic and Computer System Design" and "Principles of Computer Organization." The course he leads, "Principles of Computer Organization," has been approved as a nationally renowned online course with an annual enrollment of over 50,000 students. It is one of China's top five most popular computer open courses. His courses have been repeatedly selected as the most satisfactory by students at HUST and have received numerous awards, including the First Prize for Teaching Quality, Excellent Classroom Teaching Award, Hubei Provincial Teaching Achievement Award, and National Teaching Achievement Award. In 2013, he won the First Prize in the National Faculty Teaching Innovation Competition, New Engineering Professor Group.

The award-winning course "Fundamentals of Logic and Computer System Design," taught by Leihua Qin, is a core foundational course that is highly theoretical, engineering-oriented, technical, and practical. It serves as a bridge course for constructing computer systems. The course aims to leverage disciplinary advantages and cultivate top talents with innovative capabilities in collaborative CPU design and application, aligning with the national strategy of information and innovation. The course covers topics ranging from logic gates to CPUs, providing detailed discussions on the basic structure of digital systems, foundations of logic algebra, methods for designing basic combinational and sequential logic, as well as the working principles, design, and implementation methods of major functional components of von Neumann architecture computers. The course focuses on deepening students' holistic understanding of computer hardware systems, establishing the concept of hardware/software co-design, and enhancing students' abilities in computer system analysis, design, and optimization. The course also integrates independent IT ecosystem-related technologies, platforms, and resources, aiming to cultivate students' foundational skills, engineering capabilities, and innovation abilities in the context of the independent IT ecosystem while instilling a sense of scientific spirit, craftsmanship, and dedication to serving the nation through science and technology.

Hongxing Guo| Award-winning Course: "Signals and Linear Systems"

The main research areas of Hongxing Guo include video coding and image recognition, multimedia streaming computing and storage, intelligent perception, and location services. As the project leader, he has undertaken multiple research projects, including two National Natural Science Foundation projects, three Hubei Provincial Natural Science Foundation projects, one China Postdoctoral Science Foundation project, and one Huawei University Science and Technology Foundation project. He is one of the principal drafters of the second part of the Chinese audio and video coding standard AVS. He has filed over 10 patent applications, with eight of them already granted. He has been responsible for developing practical embedded video servers, which have been widely applied in actual video surveillance systems. The students he has supervised have won the first prize for excellent bachelor's degree theses in Hubei Province. He serves as the principal lecturer for the information major platform course at HUST. He has received honors such as the first prize in the university's young teachers' teaching competition and the Excellent Teaching Quality Award. He serves as the principal lecturer of the platform course of information-related majors at HUST. He has been awarded the first prize of the Young Teacher Teaching Competition and the Teaching Quality Excellence Award of HUST, among other honorary titles.

In his main course, "Signals and Linear Systems," Hongxing Guo deeply reveals the intrinsic relationships in the time-frequency and analog-to-digital conversion processes, and the inherent unity among various transformation forms. He showcases the beauty of their marvelous structures. He guides students to understand the linear time invariance of signal transformation systems, enabling them to "see both the trees and the forest." At the same time, by reviewing the challenging process of the acceptance of the Fourier transform theory and Huawei's constraints and breakthroughs in technologies such as 5G communication, he encourages students to firmly establish the scientific spirit of courageously pursuing truth, igniting a sense of urgency and the passion and responsibility to dare to "pioneer and excel" in the face of differences.
