On the morning of December 16, 2022, the "HUST-NUS Academic Lecture Series" and the "Second Joint Forum for Young Scholars" --AJointWorkshop on Hot Topics on System Research was successfully held. Under the guidance of the OfficeofInternationalAffairsof Huazhong University of Science and Technology(HUST), this event was jointly held by the School of Computer Science and Technology ofHUSTand the National University of Singapore(NUS)and other world-famous universities. It was carried out in the form of a Zoom online conference and online live streaming, which attracted more than 70 teachers and students from HUST to participate; Andover 3,500 people watched the live streaming online.

Xuanhua Shi, Deputy Dean of the School of Computer Science and Technology of HUST, warmly welcomed all the young scholars and top talents to participate in this Forum at the opening ceremony. He pointed out that through holding the Forum for Young Scholars, the forms of communication between various parties will be enriched, which is conducive to deepening the diversified cooperation among top universities. He hoped that the Forum could help more scholars and students benefit from academic exchanges, enhance mutual understanding, and get inspiration for innovation.

Bingsheng He, deputy dean of the School of Computing of NUS, said that it is an essential platform for the exchange of scientific research cooperation achievements. He hoped that through in-depth discussion, both sides would have more inspiration and expand the space of cooperation.

In his presentation, Professor BingshengHetook the federated learning systems as the theme and introduced its background and development in detail. This is, under the background of limited data flow and challenging data management, the federated learning systems can achieve the balance between data privacy protection and data sharing analysis and achieve effective and efficient machine learning systems on data silos. Professor He shared his experiences in the research process, and through the specific analysis of Gradient BoostingDecision Tree(GBDT)andFedTree, he showed that a safe and practical machine learning system can be realized and expressed his expectation for the future development of federated learning.

Jian Huang, an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the Urbana-Champaign of the University of Illinois, gave us a presentation, with the theme of"The ISA of Storage Systems: Interface, Specialization, and Approach." He made a vivid and thorough analysis of storage systems from the perspective of interface, specialization, and approach, and described what kind of work his team has done on storage systems.

Amelie ChiZhou, Shenzhen high-level Overseas Talent and associate professor of Shenzhen University shared his team's recent achievements at the meeting. Due to the challenges of privacy in the distributed data environment, Dr. ChiZhouproposed PGPregel (Private Geo-distributed Pregel), a graph processing system, which can realize end-to-end privacy protection graph processing for geo-distributed data centers with accuracy and low latency. It is very forward-looking.

Lin Shao, an assistant professor of the School of Computing, NUS, elaborated on model-based reinforcement learning for robotic manipulation via differentiable physics-based simulation and rendering. Professor Lin Shaoshowedhis thinking on robot learning in his presentation, specifically introducing the SAGCI-System (Sample-efficient, Generalizable, Compositional, Incremental), and demonstrating the advantages of the model framework by training a robot to open a microwave oven.

ShuhaoZhang, an assistant professor at the Singapore University of Technology and Design, gave a presentation titled "Energy-Efficient Parallel Data Stream Compression for IoT Applications." In his presentation, he focused on the concept, development, and application of stream computing, that is, the processing and analysis of data in the shortest possible time, and vividly explained the background, application, and optimization of high-performance stream computing systems.

JialinLi, assistant professor of the School of Computing, NUS, combined distributed system with data center network flow, discussed the possibility of keeping strong consistency and high performance of the distributed system and put forward a specific scheme and proved its feasibility. In his presentation, Dr. JialinLi described in detail the design idea of his distributed system based on his practical experience.

Professor Yuchong Hu, from the School of Computer Science and Technology, HUST, introduced his research on wide-stripe erasure coding for distributed storage systems. He analyzed the two methods for the assurance of data storage reliability and the challenges of wide-stripe erasure coding in distributed storage systems, shared the algorithm design of the team on wide-stripe erasure coding, and answered related questions.

Focusing on the research directions of computer storage, high-performance computing, and system architecture design, this Forum promoted the academic exchanges between young scholars and students, broadened the international perspective of teachers and students from HUST, and laid a solid foundation for the in-depth cooperation between universities.

The HUST-NUS Academic Lecture Series, held by the OfficeofInternationalAffairsofHUST, aims to enable more scholars and students to benefit from academic exchanges between HUST and NUS, improve their knowledge and cultural awareness, enhance their mutual understanding, and help them get inspiration for innovation.
