Overview of Admission and Training of International Students of School of Computer Science and Technology

Introduction of Dominant Disciplines and Majors

The School of Computer Science and Technology is authorized to award doctoral degrees in first-level disciplines of computer science and technology (the three second-level disciplines, namely, Computer Architecture, Computer Software and Theory, and Computer Application Technology, are all authorized to award doctoral degrees), and has the postdoctoral mobile station of first-level disciplines of Computer Science and Technology. The first-level discipline of Computer Science and Technology is a key discipline of Hubei Province, and Computer Architecture is a national key discipline and a characteristic discipline of colleges and universities in Hubei Province. School of Computer Science and Technology is the executive member of the China Computer Federation (CCF) and the president member of CCF in Hubei province. What's more, it is a key discipline included in the national "211 Project" and "985 Project" ("211 Project" and "985 Project" aims to support leading universities under the Ministry of Education), and the first group of the national "Double First-class" (first-class universities and disciplines of the world) construction disciplines. The Computer Science and Technology discipline was ranked as A in the 2016 Subject Assessment organized by China Academic Degrees and Graduate Education Development Center (CDGDC).

In the School of Computer Science and Technology, there are 132 full-time academic staff members, including 43 professors, and 60 associate professors. Among all the academic staff members, there are many talents, including 3 specially-appointed professors from the Changjiang Scholars Program, 4 winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 3 selected from the Leading Talent of Technological Innovation of Ten-Thousands Talents Program, 2 chief scientist of Project 973, 2 selected as candidates in Millions of Leading Engineering Talents,1 youth professor of Changjiang Scholars Program, 3 winners of Research Fund for Distinguished Young Scientists, 3 top young innovative talents of the Organization Department of CPC Central Committee, 1 national innovative talent, 1 entrepreneurial talent, 1 youth talent, and 7 winners of Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University. So far, there is 1 innovation group from the Foundation, 2 innovation teams from the Ministry of Education, and 1 innovation team from the Ministry of Science and Technology.

There are many labs and research centers related to this discipline, for example, the national and local joint engineering research center of big data technology and system, key laboratory of information storage system of Ministry of Education, key laboratory of service computing technology and system of Ministry of Education, engineering research center of data storage system and technology of Ministry of Education,key field innovation team of distributed computing of Ministry of Science and Technology, key laboratory of cluster and grid computing of Hubei Province, and Hubei Data Storage Engineering Technology Research Center, Hubei Big Data Engineering Technology Research Center, Hubei Big Data Security and Engineering Technology Research Center, Hubei Engineering Laboratory of Big Data Technology and System, state key laboratory of next generation internet access system, health big data intelligent service center of National Development and Reform Commissionin Hubei Province,and big data collaborative innovation platform of Hubei Economic and Information Technology Commission. What's more, it boasts the IBM technology center of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), and the National Center High-Performance Computing Center (Wuhan). In addition, the School of Computer Science and Technology is a member of the China Education and Research Network in Central China, the main member of China Grid, a member of China National Grid (Wuhan), and one of the important members of Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics.

At present, the school has 206 doctoral students and 907 master students, including 38 overseas doctoral students and 15 overseas master students. There are 958 doctoral graduates, who won many awards, such as 2 national excellent doctoral dissertations, 2 excellent doctoral dissertations of CCF, 3 nomination awards for excellent doctoral dissertations of CCF, 1 excellent doctoral dissertations of China Institute of Electronics, and 23 excellent doctoral dissertations of Hubei Province. There are 6276 graduate students, and 36 graduate students' dissertations were regarded as outstanding master dissertations of Hubei Province.

This discipline has formed its characteristics in such aspects as information storage technology and system, parallel and distributed computing, modern database and big data, artificial intelligence and optimization, and digital media, and has outstanding comprehensive strength.

In recent years, as for information storage technology and system, the School has carried out in-depth research in the areas of super-large scale storage systems, new storage devices and systems, storage services and security, network storage system, cloud storage, and so on, and made several innovative achievements. The School has the innovation team of the Foundation, the innovation team of the Ministry of Education, and the chief scientist of the 973 Project, which has a great influence at home and abroad.

As for parallel and distributed computing, it mainly studies cloud computing and distributed processing, multi-core architecture and system software, big data management and processing, and system security, and has made rich innovation achievements. In this regard, the School has the innovation team of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the innovation team of the Ministry of Education. What's more, it has the chief scientist of the 973 Project and is one of the schools taking the lead in the major 211 Project of the Ministry of Education.

As for modern databases and big data, the School is the first to launch database management system products in China and has made fruitful research achievements in big data processing such as social network data, intelligent multi-structure data, and data stream processing.

As for artificial intelligence and optimization theory, the School has long been committed to the research of data mining, machine learning, natural language processing, NP-hard problem solving, and other fields. In the fields of smart city, smart transportation, and smart finance, the school has chosen the research direction of digital media and has made rich research achievements in video-based content retrieval, sentiment analysis, image measurement, human-computer interaction, digital watermarking and virtual reality, as well as in natural image analysis, medical image feature extraction, and medical imaging equipment development, forming obvious research characteristics.

In addition, the school has conducted in-depth research on embedded system and information security, mobile phone support software research and development, cloud computing platform and support services, and established strategic partnerships with high-tech enterprises, forming a good research and application foundation in the development of large-scale application software, on-chip operating system, smart card application, information security software, and other aspects. In recent years, the employment situation of graduate students majoring in computer science and technology is good and the employment quality is high. The employment rate of graduate students has reached 100%. They have entered many industries, mainly including IT, Internet, state organs, and various large and medium-sized enterprises and institutions. It is worth mentioning that some graduate students have been hired by the world's top companies such as Microsoft and IBM.

International Cooperation and Exchange and Education for International Students in China

The School attaches great importance to international cooperation and exchanges, and always focuses on enhancing the international influence of the discipline, expanding the international visibility and reputation of the discipline. We have promoted the completion of the international evaluation of the discipline, implemented the joint training program by several universities through cooperation, and constantly explored new modes of international cooperation. First, raise the level of international cooperation. We will strengthen exchanges and cooperation with Carnegie Mellon University and other famous universities, jointly organize and apply for international (regional) cooperation and exchange projects, and host influential international academic conferences. Second, provide services to promote talent cultivation. We will organize face-to-face activities for international academic masters, open up channels for international cooperation and communication among students in the undergraduate and doctoral programs, and support students to go overseas for joint training and attend international academic conferences. Third, find more international cooperation platforms. We will build an international center for scientific research and talent cultivation with Turing Studio as the core and several joint research centers. Fourth, build high-level international teachers and strengthen the construction of bases for international students in China. International exchanges in the post-COVID-19 era will be carried out by exploring ways such as online courses and online international conferences. Fifth, invite famous experts at home and abroad to give lectures, sponsor graduate students to conduct cooperative research in international high-level research institutions, and sponsor graduate students to attend high-level international conferences abroad. Sixth, provide various scholarships, good research conditions for software and hardware and a relaxed academic environment for postgraduate students enrolled. We have been committed to cultivating postgraduate students with in-depth research in a certain field and preliminary research ability.

Currently, there are 86 international students in our school, including 33 undergraduates, 15 master students, and 38 doctoral students. In 2021, 3 doctoral students, 4 master students, and 4 undergraduates completed their studies and were awarded degrees. In 2022, 21 students were enrolled, including 10 master students and 3 doctoral students. The School actively work with the School of International Education (http://iso.hust.edu.cn/) to complete the management and service of international students, and actively responds to the needs of international students in terms of their life and study. First, offer professional online courses. In 2021, our School offered 18 online courses for undergraduates, 29 classes, and 2 courses for doctoral students. Second, carry out academic guidance. The school selects teachers with high English proficiency and overseas study experience as course teachers. These teachers can integrate the latest development trends, cutting-edge scientific and technological results, and research methods of the subject into classroom teaching, and ensure the quality of online teaching by using online groups after class for tutoring, Q&A, live streaming + playback, and other forms. Third, pay attention to international student management and provide services. To facilitate the management and provision of services for international students, we have established an on-campus communication platform for all international students and encourage them to communicate with each other. In this way, we can reduce the duplication of workload in management and focus on providing good services. Fourth, international students have published high-level papers, participated in various competitions, and won awards at all levels and various commendations. In 2021, at least 4 international students in our School have published 7 SCI papers, most of which are in Q1 and Q2. Among them, Fan Ziqiang, a doctoral student enrolled in 2018, not only published one SCI article, but also actively participated in the dragon boat race and won the gold medal, and served as the coordinator of an international student apartment.

Recruitment channels and promotion: Online and offline publicity, international exchange and cooperation of tutors, and recruitment website/page construction.

Admission criteria: Comprehensive consideration of students' academic level, moral performance, practical experience, and joint assessment with the tutor.

Assessment methods and admission procedures: The School of International Education conducts preliminary screening, and then the tutor and the School jointly conduct the assessment.

Quality Assurance of International Education

(International student process training and management, quality assurance, and teacher arrangement)

In the aspect of process training, the School aims at the international frontier of computer systems, deeply integrates the development of the computer industry, and creates a complete graduate training system based on the curriculum, the platform as the order, the quality control as the line. The School has built a flexible curriculum system, linked teaching classroom, research classroom, and practical classroom, which has laid a solid foundation for cultivating the frontier innovation and practical innovation ability of graduate students. Relying on the national research platform and the enterprise collaborative education practice base, the School has created an innovative talent training model driven by "collaboration of science and education, and integration of industry and education" to help improve the systematic innovation ability of graduate students. In addition, the School has established a "whole-chain supervision and continuous improvement" quality control system for postgraduate training, which provides quality assurance for cultivating a large number of high-end professionals with systematic innovation ability for serving the development of the Chinese information industry.

In terms of management and service, the School has set up full-time management and academic staff for international students, who come from foreign countries and face great differences in culture and living habits. In their daily study and life, they often encounter various difficulties that are difficult to solve. To help them get familiar with the campus environment as soon as possible and integrate into the large family of HUST, the School has set up full-time academic staff and opened up various communication channels, such as WeChat group, QQ group, e-mail, telephone, and face-to-face communication. When international students told us about difficulties they met, we listened carefully to them and tried to keep abreast of the situation and offer help whenever possible. 

The School provides international students with the following services.

(1)Guide international students to check the correctness of personal information in the registration system and complete the semester registration.

(2)Help them choose courses in the system and complete the development of a personal training plan according to the training plan.

(3)In the stage of tutor selection, give them some suggestions according to their research direction to help them successfully contact the tutor.

(4)In the learning stage, get to know whether they have difficulties in listening to lectures and learning, arrange for teachers to answer their questions after class, and ask the Chinese students in the same laboratory to give them help.

(5) Pay close attention to the changes of the epidemic at home and abroad, and correctly guide international students outside Chinato to face the epidemic. We not only need to let them fully understand the seriousness of the epidemic, but also need to provide them with psychological comfort, eliminate their panic and anxiety, and help them to cope with the epidemic with a healthy attitude. In addition, as for international students in China, the School arranges for international students to participate in nucleic acid testing together with Chinese students and urges them to complete three doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

In terms of teachers, the School adopts the method of mutual selection of teachers and students to match tutors for international students. International students are supervised by their tutors. Therefore, tutors are required to participate in the formulation of student training programs, the guidance of course learning, and the selection of research topics. The School conscientiously carries out the system of mid-term selection, majors election, and elimination, and evaluates students' dissertations realistically.

In terms of system guarantee, the Handbook for International Students of HUST covers many aspects of international students, including enrollment, student status, scholarship, teaching management, degree application, graduation, and daily life management. We have always strictly followed the Handbook to ensure the smooth progress of international students' studies and life. In addition, the academic degree committee of our School has revised the Implementation Rules of Thesis Proposal Defense and Qualification Examination for Doctoral Students in the School of Computer Science and Technology in 2020, the Implementation Rules of Mid-term Assessment for Doctoral Students in the School of Computer Science in 2020 and other documents after several meetings and discussions this year, to equally manage the admission of international doctoral students and Chinese doctoral students, strengthen the training process and improve the quality of doctoral training.

In terms of quality assurance, the School has established a "whole chain" quality control of graduate training process management. In the training stage of course learning, scientific research practice, and thesis research, we have formulated a series of rules and documents to strengthen quality control of the whole process of thesis proposal, mid-term report, expert blind examination, degree defense, and other links. Through early warning, stage assessment, immediate diversion, and other measures, the School requires training subjects at all levels and supervisors to be responsible for international students and implements the "whole chain" quality control of the graduate training process to ensure the quality of graduate training.

International Alumni

Alumni are the name card of a school, and alumni and their achievements are the most visible components of a university's achievements. Therefore, the school attaches great importance to work-related to international alumni. At the graduation stage, the School provides alumni with career support, contacts, and career counseling services to help them find suitable jobs after graduation. After students leave the school and become alumni, the School will keep in touch with them to inform them of the School's current situation and strategic development plan. By establishing WeChat groups, E-mail, and other means to collect alumni information regularly, the School has continuously strengthened contact with international alumni and promoted the exchange and cooperation between the Alma mater and alumni in the fields of education, scientific research, and culture. On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of HUST, we will invite successful alumni to return to the university to participate in several celebration activities, to further enrich the relationship between international students and the Alma mater and expand the influence of alumni work.
