    The school of Computer Science and Technology has had six research institutes, an engineering research center, 11 national or provincial sciences research bases and hatched two high-tech enterprises. The main research directions include Parallel and Distributed Computing, Database and Software Engineering, Digital Media and Intelligent Computing, Computing and Optimization Theory, Embedded System and Software, Network and Information Security, Storage Technologies and Systems. In the latest 5 years, the school has taken on over 500 research projects, including more than 280 projects sponsored by governments. And, the school has won 2 National Science and Technology Achievement Awards. There are more than 240 issued patents and more than 110 computer software copyrights. We have published more than 900 papers in the international and domestic journals and conferences.

With the development of the Internet, network and information security has been closely linked with the public's work and life. The challenges for the network and information security include: network hacker attacks, network virus threats, personal or enterprise information leakage threats and the threat generated by the network and software system vulnerabilities.
With the massive growth of information, how to ensure the accessibility and effectiveness of privacy and sensitive data has become an important challenge for the development of information network. We focus on the researches on security hardware module and trusted execution environment of the trusted computing  key technology and trusted computing platform mechanism based on four aspects of equipment, data, content, behavior, ensure the overall safety of the communication system.
Institute of theory and applications of computing science (i.e., institute of theory) was previously the institute of theoretical computer science of school of computer science and technology at Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Our main research areas include: Resolution of NP hard problems, modeling of complex systems, applications of artificial intelligence, data mining, machine learning and so on.. Our institute has 4 professors, 5 associate professors, 3 lecturers and more than 50 on-going PhD and Master students.
Digital Media Institute's main research interests include digital image and video processing technologies, including medical image processing, video retrieval, digital watermarking, machine vision, video analysis, medical imaging equipment, video-based industrial measurement, image recognition and so on. Currently,there are 19 full-time teachers, including 6 professors, 9 associate professors at the institute. More than 30 graduate students are enrolled.
Now data are connected with the following characteristics: high volume, high evolution speed, low data quality, and non-structuration. We focus on conducting researches on big data analysis which includes social computing, multi-modal data processing, big data security and data stream processing,techniques for big data management and platform techniques for supporting big data analysis. We also conduct researches on software vulnerability and security checking.
Parallel and distributed computing has offered the opportunity of solving a wide range of computationally intensive problems by increasing the computing power of computer systems. Although important improvements have been achieved in this field in the last 30 years, there are still many important challenges. They arise from several broad areas, such as the design of parallel systems and scalable interconnects, the evolution of computer architectures, and the development of algorithms and applications.
