On June 12, Wuhan Dameng Database Co., Ltd., recognized as the first Chinese database company to go public, was officially listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange STAR Market.
The origins of Dameng trace back to 1982, when Professor Feng Yucai from the School of Computer Science and Technology at Huazhong Institute of Technology (now Huazhong University of Science and Technology) founded a research group focused on database technology and product development. In 1992, Professor Feng Yucai spearheaded the establishment of the Dameng Database Multimedia Research Institute at HUST. The institute's team was composed primarily of professors, graduate students, and undergraduates from the university. Today, several senior vice presidents at Dameng are former members of this initial team.
Dameng specializes in researching, developing, and selling database products and related technologies. Over the years, the company has led several critical national scientific and technological projects during China's 11th and 13th Five-Year Plans, achieving breakthroughs in critical core technologies such as shared storage clusters. These innovations have significantly contributed to the domestic database industry's ability to compete globally.
"Dameng’s successful entry into the STAR Market amidst fierce competition once again demonstrates that independent innovation and mastering core technologies are the essential paths for the development of Chinese tech companies," said Feng Yucai, Chairman of Dameng.
As a fundamental infrastructure in the digital era and a core technology of the digital economy, databases have become the cornerstone for transforming traditional industries, fostering emerging industries, and building future industries. For over 40 years, Dameng has adhered to an independent and original technical path, maintaining a firm grip on core frontier technologies in the database sector and holding full independent intellectual property rights. The company has built the “source code foundation” for Chinese databases.
To date, Dameng holds more than 320 authorized patents and over 370 software copyrights. Through its integrated "technology + market + service + ecosystem + talent" strategy, Dameng has become the leading domestic provider of full-stack data products and solutions. The company has achieved compatibility with over 9,000 products from upstream and downstream manufacturers in the industry chain and is fully compatible with the cybersecurity ecosystem. Dameng has also established deep cooperation with over 1,000 top-tier ISVs and channel partners across key industries. Its products are now successfully applied in government agencies, finance, energy, telecommunications, transportation, education, healthcare, and other sectors.
As of now, Dameng is among 10 companies from China's Optics Valley listed on the STAR Market, bringing the total number of listed companies in the region to 65, positioning it as a leader among national high-tech zones.
For decades, the School of Computer Science and Technology at HUST has focused on meeting national strategic needs, actively promoting the commercialization of scientific research, and supporting technological innovation and entrepreneurship. In the 1980s and 1990s, the School supported its faculty in founding several innovative tech companies, including Dameng. The close collaboration between Dameng and the School continues today through corporate classes and original research projects. Together, they remain committed to empowering new forms of productivity and nurturing innovative talent.
